About Andrea

Music really is a powerful thing. It’s a form of expression, a creative outlet, and in the case of Italian singer-songwriter Andrea Di Giovanni, and expression of truth.

Born into a strictly observant Catholic family, Andrea grew up in Rome as the middle child between his older brother and younger sister. His mother, who came from a large Italian family, installed in him the values of sticking together and protecting each other… something Andrea still holds dear.

Despite his close family unit, it was outside of the family home that Andrea struggled to fit into society. Diagnosed with Vitiligo at the age of 5, and teased for his feminine manners, he was an easy target for bullies as a child. Becoming aware of his own sexuality from a young age left him confused about his feelings, often feeling shameful and full of guilt. His only release was to sing, and when he did so, he felt completely invincible.

Taking his inspiration from the greats; Whitney Houston, Mary J Blige, Michael Jackson and Queen, Andrea started singing lessons at the age of 8 years old. Though he respected his mother’s wishes and finished his education, it wasn’t long before Andrea was making a name for himself within the Italian music industry. Chosen as the face of Song4Life, a national alcohol awareness campaign and participating in the TV show Amici di Maria de Filippi, he began to carve out his own story.

Struggling with life in the limelight, Andrea experienced episodes of anxiety and depression but found solace and strength through his songwriting.  In 2016 his single ‘Hold Me Once More’ was picked up by MTV New Generation, and he was named Artist of the Month.

Making the decision to be the master of his own destiny, Andrea packed his bags and headed to London, not only in pursuit of a career in music but in search of a place where he felt more comfortable expressing his sexuality.

Since his move to the capital, Andrea’s career has gone from strength to strength; having performed at Brighton Pride in front of 300,000 people, as well as a very special live show at Shepherds Bush Empire as part of his final showcase for his university course at BIMM. He has also filmed a live session with Sofar Sounds London and has clocked up hundreds of thousands of views on his Vevo channel.

Having focused on his writing over the last year, Andrea is set to release a number of new singles in the next few months. Influenced by a wide variety of styles and genres, his delivery of playful, quirky electronic pop is enough to get you moving, yet at the same time, his compelling honesty makes you want to stop and listen intently.

“Nowadays where everything else is polluted, art remains the only pure form of communication; only art speaks the real truth about society and you can't tame it.”  - Andrea Di Giovanni

It is this honesty, raw at times, that is the center of Andrea’s love for fashion.  Mixing the androgynous style often portrayed by designers like Alexander McQueen or Balenciaga, with black leather, weird shapes, and textures, he believes that the clothes you wear should be an extension of your soul.

His individual flair and charisma caught the eye of Drag Race superstar Ru Paul, who has supported him openly on Twitter. This became a significant milestone for Andrea, who felt even more enabled to push the boundaries of a 'masculine' society and embrace his individuality.

His favourite quote remains:

Unless they're paying your bills, pay them b*tches no mind - RuPaul

ABBEVILLE — Even after having to find another venue, Friday’s benefit drag show hosted by Queens to the Rescue ended up drawing in an enthusiastic crowd.

The show was originally slated to be hosted at Howard’s on Main in Greenwood, but had to change venues earlier this month. The event, which raised money for the Humane Society of Greenwood and Abbeville County animal services, found its home at Natty’s on Trinity, which hosts a monthly drag show already.

“We’ve sold double the tickets we expected, and everybody at Natty’s has been so supportive and great,” said Michelle Shara, Queens to the Rescue founder and the event’s organizer. “All of these entertainers are doing this for free. They’re just doing this to raise money for animals.”

The show featured performances from hostess Onya Mann, as well as performances from Tricia Lust, Shania Satisfaction, Misster Cosplay, Vanity Von Dank and Vegas Von Dank. The show’s organizers, Queens to the Rescue, is a group dedicated to using drag performances to raise money for various animal rescue groups throughout the region.

“It was supposed to be just one show at first, but it just blew up,” Shara said. “I guess it just started because I really like drag. I wanted other people to experience how cool this is.”

The show melded comedy and dance, with the artists performing dance routines and lip-syncing to various songs. Each time one of the performers took to the stage, they had changed into another outfit ranging from elegant gowns to latex body suits and custom-made, colorful ensembles.

The crowd went wild for it, cheering and clapping along with the music and offering tips to the performers as they danced through the bar, mimicking singing their songs often with an over-the-top dramatic flair. All the while, host Onya Mann made it clear that all the fun that was had was in favor of raising money.

She ended the night with a call for unity — despite being booted from their original venue at Howard’s, she asked the attendees to go and eat there. There were no hard feelings about the change of venue, especially since the show completely sold out, Shara said.

House of Mann for Bebe Rexha

Bebe Rexha says several designers declined to dress her for Grammys because she’s ‘too big’

News: A lot of designers don't want to dress me because I'm too big, says Bebe Rexha of her size 8 figurex

WARNING: This story contains explicit language.

Singer Bebe Rexha is speaking out against designers who have said they won’t dress her for the Grammys due to her size.

As the Grammys approach, she took to social media to discuss the trouble she’s been having when her and her team reach out to designers but they all allegedly decline because she’s “too big.”

“Im sorry, I had to get this off my chest. If you don’t like my fashion style or my music that’s one thing,” Rexha, who is nominated for Best New Artist and Best Country Duo/Group Performance, wrote.

“But don’t say you can’t dress someone that isn’t a runway size. We are beautiful any size! Small or large! Anddddd My size 8 ass is still going to the Grammys. #LOVEYOURBODY,” Rexha tweeted with a video of her explaining the situation.

“So I finally get nominated at the Grammys and it’s like the coolest thing ever,” she said at the beginning of her video.

“And a lot of times, artists will go and talk to designers and they’ll make them custom dresses to walk the red carpet right, like you go to any big designer,” she shared.

She continued: “So I had my team hit out a lot of designers and a lot of them do not want to dress me because I’m too big. Literally, I’m too big,” the Meant To Be singer said.

“If a size 6-8 is too big, then I don’t know what to tell you. I don’t want to wear your f**king dresses. Cause that’s crazy. You’re saying all the women in the world that are size 8 and up are not beautiful and they cannot wear your dresses,” Rexha said.

“So all the people who said I’m thick and I can’t wear dresses, f**k you and I don’t want to wear your f**king dresses,” Rexha concluded.

Rexha never released the names of the designers who have told her she’s “too big” and declined to dress her.

After Rexha posted her message to social media, many people spoke out in support of her including Tyra BanksHouse of Mann designer  Brandon Hilton and Adam Lambert.

Tyra Banks quoted Rexha’s tweet, adding her own comment, “The day I met You [i]n Toronto, I knew U were xtra special. [ou]R impromptu posing lesson backstage was MAJOR. You stuck that leg & hip out & Tooched & Smized at the same time. Those designers that don’t wanna dress U are DUMB. U my dear @BebeRexha are pure genius… H2T – head to toe!.”

Pop artist Dorian Electra has always been a critic of the way our society talks about gender. Through many of their videos and songs, Electra has pointed out time and time again that gender is nothing but a construct and that the different ways society interacts with gender can be dangerous and harmful.

Electra continued their work of educating the people with their new video for “Man to Man,” which effortlessly handles the complex subject of toxic masculinity. Throughout the video, Electra appears onscreen depicting different variations of “real men”; the star dresses as a boxer, a knight, a street fighter, a matador and many other archetypes.

But the lyrics Electra sings point out the inherent ridiculousness of our concept of “manliness.” While dressed as stereotypically macho men, Electra asks the men listening whether or not they are truly as hardened as they claim to be. “Are you bad enough to soften up?/ Are you tough enough to open up?” Electra asks.

The “Career Boy” singer has been busy as of late. Along with preparing their highly anticipated debut album for release in 2019, Electra just hosted and performed alongside artists like Charli XCX and Allie X at The Billy Ball, a fundraising concert for musician Billy Clayton, who is battling a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer.
